There's a Sourceforge version of the game classic "StarControl 2." Apparently they took the old 3DO code for the game and modernized it, so it works on Windows with DirectX. They also have remixes for all the old music in the game.
The older versions of the freeware game didn't have the remixed music. The current version (0.4) does. They also have the option of using stuff like bilinear filtering to smooth out the chunky low-res graphics.
It seems 3 tried to be both a strategy game like 1 and a story-driven game like 2, but was not spectacular at either. Starcontrol 2 definitely had the most depth of all the games, although once you've played it, you'll know where to go for everything. But you can still just play resource gathering and expore all the easter eggs.
